Vaccinations Flashcards
what is a vaccine?
dead or inactive pathogenic material used in vaccinations to develop immunity to a disease in a healthy person
what happens when you get a vaccination? (1)
syringe injects a small amount of a dead/inactive form of a pathogen
what happens when you get a vaccination? (2)
lymphocytes produce antibodies
what happens when you get a vaccination? (3)
antibodies attach to the antigens on pathogens and cause pathogens to clump and stick together
what happens when you get a vaccination? (4)
phagocytes engulf pathogens. eventually you become immmune to future infections by the pathogen bc your body knows how to respond rapidly + create the correct antibody as if you already had the disease
what happens in the primary infection?
antibodies are produced slowly and there aren’t many made
what happens in the secondary infection?
antibodies are produced rapidly and a lot more are made
what is herd immunity?
the protection given to a population against an outbreak of a specific disease when a very high percentage of the population have been vaccinated against it
what is a recognised scenario in relation to herd immunity? (1)
no one is vaccinated, mass infection occurs.
what is a recognised scenario in relation to herd immunity? (2)
some of the population is vaccinated, so disease spreads through some of population yet mass infection can still occur.
what is a recognised scenario in relation to herd immunity? (3)
most of population is vaccinated, spread of contagious disease is contained
