Monoclonal antibodies Flashcards
what are antibodies?
proteins produced by a type of white blood cell called lymphocytes
what are antigens?
proteins on the surface of pathogens
what do lymphocytes do?
recognise the antigens as foreign and attack them by producing antibodies
do antibodies bind to specific or any type of antigens on pathogens?
specific, only one type of antibody will bind to a matching antigen
what happens first in the formation of monoclonal antibodies?
an antigen is injected into a mouse
what happens second in the formation of monoclonal antibodies?
The mouse’s spleen cells naturally produce lymphocytes, which produce antibodies specific to the antigen
what happens third in the formation of monoclonal antibodies?
spleen cells are removed from mouse’s spleen
what happens fourth in the formation of monoclonal antibodies?
The mouse’s spleen cells are fused with human cancerous white blood cells called myeloma cells to form hybridoma cells which divide indefinitely
what happens fifth in the formation of monoclonal antibodies?
These hybridoma cells divide and those that produce millions of monoclonal antibodies specific to the original antigen are separated
what happens sixth in the formation of monoclonal antibodies?
the antibodies are collected
what can monoclonal antibodies be used for? (name 5 things)
helping people who are unwell, drug testing, treating cancer, stopping cancerous cell growth and pregnancy tests
how do they help people who are unwell?
monoclonal antibodies can b injected into people if unable to create enough of their own antibodies
how are they used in drug testing?
fluorescent dye is attached to antibodies (only shows IF the antibodies bind to drug antigen). antibodies mixed w/ sample from athlete - if drug is present fluorescent dye will show.
how are they used in cancer treatment?
monoclonal antibodies injected into patients bind to cancer cells + cause phagocytes to come and engulf cancer cell
how are they used to stop the growth of cancer cells?
monoclonal antibodies injected into patients bind to cancer cells + block substances needed for cell growth from entering cell which = cell death
