Painkillers are only used to treat symptoms, they cannot kill pathogens. Painkillers are a drug.

A

Penicillin was the first antibiotic to be discovered, in 1928 by Alexander Fleming.

A

He noticed some bacteria he had left in a petri dish had been killed by the secretions from a naturally occurring mould.

What is a vaccine?

A

Weakened of dead version of a pathogen which is injected inside you. As it is weakened, it shouldn’t make you ill, but there is a chance it will.

What are the 3 steps of a vaccination?

A

1) introduce a small amount of inactive or dead pathogen
2) the body makes more WBCs which make antibodies to destroy pathogen
3) When the body is infected for real, the immune response will be larger and quicker!
