Vaccination Flashcards
What are antibodies?
Chemicals made my by lymphocytes
What are antigens?
Surface proteins that identify a cell
Name 2 risks of immunisation
Mild reaction/ mild form of the disease
Very rarely a person can have a major harmful reaction
Describe the difference between a vaccine and immunisation
A vaccine contains a dead or harmless form of a pathogen that is used to immunise a person
Immunisation means giving a vaccine to cause an immune response in the body
What are monoclonal antibodies?
Antibodies that carry useful chemical markers or treatments.
A set of monoclonal antibodies are identical because they are produced in large quantities from the same hybrids a cells
What can monoclonal antibodies be used for?
In pregnancy tests to identify if the pregnancy hormone is present
To stick to blood clots or cancer cells so they can be detected and treated
