Communication & Humans Flashcards
What are some examples of social behaviour?
Defending a larger territory
Some individuals watching for danger while others feed
Fighting off predators as a group
Working as a group to hunt for food
Animals communicate to transit information to other animals using different types of signal. Name three ways in which animals can communicate.
Sound
Chemical (pheromones)
Visual
What is co-evolution?
A change in characteristics that is caused in one species by a change in another species.
Give two examples where plants communicate using chemicals.
Communicate with pollinating animals using scent
Communicate with other plants by chemicals in the ground or in the air
What where the 5 fossil species of human evolution?
Ardi - 4.4million - tree climber, walked upright
Lucy - 3.2million - walked upright face ape-like
Homo habilis - 2.4-1.4million flat - face, first tool users
Homo erectus - 1.8-0.5million - long distance walker, strongly built
How has climate change affected human migration?
Ice age - walk over seas Africa to Asia
Low sea levels - walk across Asia to North America
After ice age - humans migrated north as the land became habitable
What is Mitochondrial DNA?
The DNA found inside mitochondria in cells. It has several features that make it more useful than the DNA in a nucleus for tracking human migration and human evolution
