Vaccination Flashcards
define vaccination
biological preparation that is administered to a host to improve his/her immunity to a particular disease (infection or subtype of infection).
Qualities of an ideal vaccine
Produces a immune response Elicits protection against disease and re-infection Provides protection for several years, minimal adverse events or mild disease protects against multiple strains
Vaccines can be considered:? (2)
active and passive
Active vaccine
Administration of an organism, or an organism component, in order to stimulate the host immune response to the infection.
Should result in long lasting immunity
Requires days to weeks to develop immunity
passive vaccine
Administration of preformed antibodies
immediate immunity, short lived 3-4 wks
2 Types of (active) vaccines
- Live attenuated vaccine
2. Inactivated
Live attenuated vaccine
a live organism for which virulence has been weakened
ex. smallpox
Inactivated
inactive (killed) organism
Passive Immunity – Mother to Child via? (2)
breast milk and placenta
A mother can only pass on the antibodies that she has formed in response to infection or vaccination
