Infection Control Measures Flashcards
4 Conditions required for an infection to occur
Organism present (human host, other animal, environment)
A susceptible person
Contact that allows transfer of infection to susceptible host
Organism that can establish itself within the body
Susceptible means?
No immunity
Immunity may result from? 3
Innate immunity
Past exposure
Vaccination
4 Targets for Prevention
Infected person, animal or environment
A susceptible person
Contact that allows transfer
Establishment of organism in the body
8 types of Control measures
Environmental controls Behavior modification Immunization Personal protective equipment Medication Social distancing Disease Monitoring and Investigation Reducing economic equality
Behavior modification
health edu targeted at general public & high risk groups
ex. sex ed
Immunization
person made immune or resistant to ID (infectious disease)
using vaccine - stimulates body own immune system for protection
Personal protective equipment
equipment that acts as a physical barrier to infections
ex. gloves, masks, gowns
Medication
decreases the period of contagiousness
Curing isn’t always the goal, EX. HIV
post exposure prophylactic
Social distancing
to increase distance bt infected and susceptible person
restrictions on social gatherings
ISOLATION
Physical separation of sick
QUARNETINE
Physical separation of EXPOSED
Herd immunity
The presence of a large proportion of immune people in the population that lessens the likelihood that an infected person will come into contact with someone who is susceptible
Epidemic
has a frequency in excess of normal expectancy
Pandemic
very virulent, happens when no herd immunity, all over in large parts of the world, crossing boundaries
