What is Buerger disease?
Inflammatory condition that causes thrombus formation in the small and medium-sized blood vessels in the distal arterial system
Who is typically affected by Buerger disease?
Men between 25-35
Smokers
What notable features for diagnosis are there for Buerger disease?
Younger than 50
Not having risk factors for atherosclerosis other than smoking
How does Buerger disease present?
Painful, blue discolouration to fingertips or tips of toes
Pain worse at night
May progress to ulcers, gangrene and amputations
Corkscrew collaterals
Typical finding on angiograms, where new collateral vessels form to bypass affected arteries
How is Buergers disease managed?
Stop smoking results in significant improvement
Cutting down or nicotine replacement, not adequate
Intravenous iloprost
(prostacyclin analogue to dilate blood vessels)
