V(3) Mandibular Nerve Flashcards
What is the neuron, fiber, or branch of the mandibular nerve?
BOTH motor and sensory!
Where does the mandibular nerve travel through?
travels through the foramen ovale
The mandibular nerve has motor branches. What are the motor branches of the mandibular nerve?
- temporal nerve
- masseteric nerve
- medial and lateral pterygoid nerves
- mylohyoid nerve
What is the function of the temporal nerve?
Temporalis muscle
What is the function of the masseteric nerve?
masseter muscle
What is the function of the medial/lateral pterygoid nerves?
mesial/lateral pterygoid muscles
What is the function of mylohyoid nerve?
mylohyoid muscle (floor of the mouth)
V(3), mandibular nerve has sensory nerves. What are the sensory nerves of V(3), mandibular nerve?
- Buccal Nerve (aka: “long buccal nerve)
- auriculartemporal nerve
- lingual nerve
- inferior alveolar nerve
- mental nerve
- incisive nerve
What is the function of the buccal nerve?
buccal mucosa and buccal gingiva associated w/the mandibular molars (#17, #18, #19) and (#30, #31, #32)
What is the function of the auriculartemporal nerve?
ear and skin surrounding the ear
What is the function of the lingual nerve?
body of tongue, floor of the mouth, lingual mandibular gingiva
The lingual nerve travels with what other nerve?
travels w/chord of tympani branch of VII (facial nerve) *which is going to do taste
What is the function of the inferior alveolar nerve?
b/w ramus and sphenomandibular ligament
The inferior alveolar nerve enters through what foramen?
enters the mandibular foramen
What does the inferior alveolar nerve supply?
supplies the mandibular molars and the surrounding periodontium
