Introduction CNS PNS Flashcards
What are the two Nervous Systems?
Central Nervous System and Peripheral Nervous System
AKA: CNS and PNS
What does the CNS consist of?
Consists of brain and spinal cord
What does the PNS consist of?
Consists of spinal and cranial nerves
What are the two kinds of nerves we talk about?
Sensory Neurons and Motor Neurons
The sensory neurons are what kind of neurons?
Afferent Neurons
The motor neurons are what kind of neurons?
Efferent Neurons
What does Afferent neurons mean?
takes information TO the CNS
What does Efferent neurons mean?
takes information FROM the CNS
e.g. for sensory
taste
e.g. for motor
brain tells your body what to do (movement)
The PNS consists of how many Spinal Nerves?
31 which exit from the Spinal Cord
What are the 31 pairs of the PNS spinal nerves.
Cervical –7 Lumbar–7
Thoracic—12 Sacral—5
PNS is part of what nervous system?
the Autonomic Nervous System
How does the ANS operate?
it operates w/out conscious control
What kind of fibers does the ANS consist of?
sensory and motor fibers
What two divisions does the ANS have?
Parasympathetic and Sympathetic
What is meant by parasympathetic?
restful digestive, restorative process
What is meant by sympathetic?
“Fight or Flight” response
Sympathetic Nervous System has what kind of neurotransmitters?
norepinephrine
What is the function changes of sympathetic nervous system?
- increased heart rate and blood pressure
- pupil dilation
- decreased GI motility
- decreased salivary secretions
- bronchodilation (so we can breathe better)
Parasympathetic Nervous System has what kind or neurotransmitters?
acetylcholine
What is the function changes of parasympathetic nervous system?
- decreased heart rate and blood pressure
- pupil constriction
- increased GI motility
- increased salivary secretions
- bronchoconstriction
What is the regional difference of the Sympathetic nervous system?
arises from thoracic and lumbar regions of spinal cord
What is the regional difference of the parasympathetic nervous system?
arises from sacral region and cranial nerves III, VII, IX, and X
(VII-sublingual & submandibular glands; IX-parotid gland)
What kind of response is the sympathetic nervous system known for?
BIG response
What kind of response is the parasympathetic nervous system known for?
small response
