UX Design 1.4 - Information Architecture Flashcards
Information Architecture “IA”
The organization of information within a system. It helps people understand their surroundings and find what they’re looking for, in the real world as well as online. In UX, it refers to the structure of a website or app in both physical and digital forms.
user flow
how users flow through the information architecture space to complete the main tasks necessary to address our problem statement.
task analyses
The review of the user flow to ensure all possible information and navigational issues surrounding the completion of a particular task have been considered
Information
What is conveyed or represented by a particular arrangement or sequence of things.
Architecture
the complex or carefully designed structure of something.he complex or carefully designed structure of something.
Library science
The study and implementation of “knowledge-organization systems.
Cognitive psychology
The study of mental processes such as mental models and cognitive load.
Mental Model
A person’s believes about a particular system or concept. They can vary from person to person, especially when considering cultural or demographic differences.
Card sort
A participatory design method to evaluate and/or generate ideas for the information architecture of a product or service which helps a researcher understand their mental model.
Open card sorts
Participants sort concepts into categories and label them. A generative approach, to give new ideas on how to categorize and label concepts.
Closed card sorts
Participants sort concepts based on pre-determined categories. An evaluative approach, to understand if the categories are properly labeled.
Ontology
The IA discovers, defines and articulates the rules and patterns of what is meant to be communicated.
Taxonomy
Is the developing of the systems and structures for what everything is called, where it is sorted and the relationships between the labels.
Choreography
Is the structures created to foster specific type of movement and interaction that anticipates how information and users want it to flow.
task analysis
Identifies the common steps required to perform and complete a specific task.
