Influencing (digital) users – 6 principles

A

1) Reciprocity – People tend to return a favor (e.g. free gift with purchase)
2) Commitment and Consistency – If people commit, they are more likely to honor that commitment.
3) Social Proof – People will do things that they see other people are doing.
4) Authority – People will tend to obey authority figures, even if they are asked to
perform objectionable acts.
5) Liking – People are easily persuaded by other people that they like.
6) Scarcity – Perceived scarcity will generate demand.

Utility = Does it do what users need?

Usability = How easy & pleasant these features are to use?

Useful = Utility + Usability

5 quality components of usability

A

1) Learnability: How easy is it for users to accomplish basic tasks the first time they
encounter the design?
2) Efficiency: Once users have learned the design, how quickly can they perform
tasks?
3) Memorability: When users return to the design after a period of not using it, how
easily can they reestablish proficiency?
4) Errors: How many errors do users make, how severe are these errors, and how
easily can they recover from the errors?
5) Satisfaction: How pleasant is it to use the design?
