In social anxiety disorder, patients are anxious about >1 social situation for >6 months. In performance only, they are only anxious when it comes to performance.

In regular social anxiety disorder, you would treat with first line SSRI. In performance only, you would treat with a beta blocker such as propranolol or a benzodiazepine.

What is the preferred treatment for specific phobias?

Answer 3

Specific phobias must be present for >6 months. The first line treatment is behavioral therapy–systematic desensitization. Benzodiazepines can be used for short-term treatment in instances where the patient cannot be evaluated.
