resolution of symptoms on dairy-restricted diet
LACTOSE BREATH HYDROGEN TEST (undigested lactose is metabolized by colonic bacteria, releasing hydrogen gas and other byproducts)
table. Management?
Dietary restriction of lactose
Lactase replacement if dairy ingested
in general CP in case?
postprandial GI distess (pain, bloating), benign abdominal examination, normal lab study.
Lactose deficiency may be precipitated by inflammatory disorders affecting the brush border, such as infectious gastroenteritis, celiac disease or crohn disease

SIBO. causes bloating and diarrhea in susceptible patients ( intestinal surgery, scleroderma)
SIBO in unlikely in a patient with regular bowel movements and no relevant risk factors.

Lactase concentration declines as one ages into adulthood. most common race - asians (90 proc.) and africans.
less common in europeans
