Uveitis Flashcards
What makes up uveal tissue?
Iris, choroid and ciliary body
Where does intermediate uveitis occur?
Within ciliary body
List some causes of uveitis?
HLA B27, JIA SLE Behcets Sarcoidosis TB, HIV, Syphilis, Leprosy
What are the symptoms of anterior uveitis?
Pain on accommodation (as pupillary sphincter muscle is inflammed) and aching pain
What are the classic exam findings of anterior uveitis?
Reduced visual acuity, circumciliary injection, keratic precipitates, inflammatory cells in anterior chamber, miosis with posterior synechiae
What causes iris bombe?
Apposition if the iris to the lens prevents aqueous from flowing from the posterior chamber to the anterior chamber. The pressure in the posterior chamber rises, causing a bowing of the peripheral iris, blocking the trabecular meshwork. This results in closed angle glaucoma
What are the signs of posterior uveitis?
Inflammatory products
Macular oedema
Optic nerve swelling
Vascular sheathing
How does posterior uveitis present?
Often asymptomatic but can have floaters and blurred vision
How is anterior uveitis managed?
Topical steroid drops
Cycloplegics
How is posterior uveitis managed?
Orbital floor steroid injection
Systemic steroids
What is the most common cause of retinal detachment?
Posterior vitreous detachment
