Uveitis Flashcards
def
intraocular inflammation of both the uveal tract and neighbouring structures (retina, vitreous, optic nerve)
what is the uveal tract
middle layer of the wall of the eye
what are the three main parts of the uveal tract
1 choroid (later filled with blood vessels) 2 ciliary body (ring of muscle which changes the size of the pupil and the shape of the lens) 3 the iris (coloured part of the eye)
what is the uvea
AKA as the uveal tract
epi
common
anterior uveitis > posterior uveitis
risk factors/associations
1 systemic inflammatory diseases such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis, RA, IBD
half of ankylosing spondylitis patients develop anterior uveitis
2 HLA B27 positive
what are the different classifications of uveitis
anterior (most common)
posterior
what is inflamed in anterior uveitis
anterior chamber
what is inflamed in posterior uveitis
retina or choroid
aetiology of anterior uveitis
1 infection (HSV, VSV)
2 as aa manifestation of systemic inflammatory conditions (juvenile idiopathic arthritis, HLA B27 spondyloarthritides such as ankylosing spondylitis, RA, IBD)
3 sarcoidosis
4 behcets disease
what is behcets disease
vasculitis
aetiology of posterior uveitis
1 infection (CMV, TB) 2 systemic inflammatory conditions (sarcoidosis)
history of anteior uveitis
dull pain in anterior uveitis which gets worse on accommodation (there is no pain in posterior uveitis)
redness, watering, blurred vision
history of posterior uveitis
no pain
blurred vision
floaters
examination
1 small irregular pupil
2 decreased visual acuity
3 slit lamp looking for keratic precipitates which are deposits of leukocytes on the corneal endothelium
