Uvea Flashcards
What is it made up of?
Choroid
Ciliary Body
Iris
What are some portals of entry for uveitis?
Haematogenous
Trauma
Extension from other structures
What are some causes of uveitis?
Systemic infections Neoplasia Immune mediated Trauma Idiopathic
CS of uveitis?
Red eyes, excess blinking/tears, corneal oedema, miosis (constriction), hyphaemia (in anterior chamber)
What are some consequences to uveitis?
Adhesions (iris to cornea)
Impairs aqueous flow from posterior to anterior chamber
Glaucoma
Retinal detachment
Cataract and lens luxation
Hyperemia of conjunctiva
Hypopyon (accumulation of neutrophils in anterior chamber)
Phthisis bulbi (shrunken, end stage globe, ciliary body atrophies)
What is glaucoma?
Sustained intraocular pressure
Many causes but all due to a decrease removal of aqueous humour
Detrimental to retina and optic nerve –> atrophy –> blindness
Primary - developmental defect in aqueous humour drainage pathway
Secondary - haemorrhage, inflamm, neoplasia
Glaucoma consequences
Corneal ulceration Blindness Corneal oedema Cataracts Blurred vision Lens luxation
