Define defragmentation
Re-organising the data on a hard drive to speed up access (less disc accesses) and free up storage space
What’s a virus?
A malicious computer program hidden inside another program. Can replicate itself and insert itself into other files to be passed on.
What’s spyware?
Malware that often comes packaged with other (often free) software without the user’s knowledge. It spies by sending screenshots and key presses to the hacker.
What’s ransomware?
Software designed to lock out user access to their system until a ransom is paid to unlock it.
What’s a trojan?
Malware disguised as legitimate software, designed to cause damage or provide access to criminals.
What’s a worm?
Malware with the ability to independently replicate itself and spread throughout a system.
What are the two ways that anti-malware works?
- Compare files with a database of known malware signatures
- Heuristics; looking at suspicious behaviour such as a program trying to copy itself
