Trotsky

A

‘The ends justify the means as long as there is something that justifies the end ‘. This suggests that the means may not necessarily be justified as this theory is based on predicting future consequences. These are hard to predict.

Q

R.M. Hare

A

Weakness with rule utilitarianism. Is that if a menace runs into a shop and asks where the person is has gone instinct would be to lie , a rule utilitarian would have to be honest , because you aren’t allowed to break a rule even though in this situation greater good would come from lying

Q

Alasdair MacIntyre

A

Utilitarianism could justify horrendous acts as being for the pleasure of many. Focus on happiness is the cause of the problem. ‘ That men are happy with their lot never entails that their lot is what is ought to because the question Can always be raised of how great the price is that is being paid for the happiness ‘
