Psychology Of Religion Flashcards
Freud longing for a father
’ the longing for the father is the root of the need for religion ‘
Freud illusions
'’Religious beliefs are illusions , fulfilment of the oldest , strongest and most insistent of wishes of mankind , the secret of their strength is the strength of these wishes’’
Hick
The verdict that religion Can be explained away by psychology is ‘ not proven ‘. While Freud and jung offered valuable insights into the mechanisms that lead to religious belief , there is nothing compelling in either account to lead us to conclude that religion is a construct of mental activity.
Russell
Religion is based , I think , primarily and mainly upon feat … Fear of the mysterious , fear of defeat , fear of death’
Feuerbach
Many of friends ideas heavily influenced by feuerbach. Feuerbach believed that God is created as a wish fulfilment. Feuerbach states that God is the perfected idea of man. We don’t give God negative qualities. ‘ what man is in need of he makes his God’ ‘ what man wishes to be he makes his God ‘
Rohein
Theory of archetypes is unnecessary as humans share a lot of similar experiences. Such as dependance on parents so it makes sense that people construct similar myths
Rolland
Said that Freud hadn’t properly appreciated the source of religion. Humans share an ‘oceanic feeling ‘ this is the feeling of innate religiousness. People can justifiably call themselves religious cause of this feeling.
Freud response to Rolland
He says he doesn’t have this feeling. And explains this feeling by the remnants of infantile narcissism.
Dawkins
’ I am one of an increasing number of biologists who see religion as a byproduct of something else ‘
Popper
‘Freuds theories describe some facts , but in the manner of myths. They contain most interesting psychological suggestions but not in a testable form’
Malinowski
Studies the Trobriands and doing no evidence of Oedipus complex , they had a religion but no evidence of Oedipus complex as children aren’t raised with a father figure. Therefore the complex doesn’t cause religion.
Martin Buber
Isn’t convinced with Jung saying that an experience which stems from the mind , and as such in no was external to the subject, can be termed a religious experience
