UTI treatment Flashcards
How do we treat common UTI’s
Empirical treatment, if the UTI is uncomplicated and this patient doesn’t have recurrent UTI’s a general course of oral antibiotics is used
what does Rx stand for?
Treatment
What are common first line antibiotics for UTI’s
- Nitrofurantoin
- trimethoprim
- fosfomycin
What are common second line antibiotics for UTI’s
- Augmentin (amoxicillin/clavulanic acid)
- oral cephalosporins
- Fluoroquinolones
Why is nitrofurantoin a good antibiotic for UTI infection treatment
It is rapidly excreted in the urine in high amounts and is narrow spectrum as it is only used to treat UTI’s (limited resistance)
When would you not use nitrofurantoin
for proteus spp as they have reduced susceptibility
Is proteus spp seen in common UTI’s or complicated UTI’s
Complicated UTIs such as kidney stone or catheterisation
What is a downside to using Trimethoprim
Bacteria are resistant quickly
Why is it important to try and use narrow spectrum antibiotics before broad spectrum
to reduce antibiotic resistance and to keep broad spectrum available for serious infections (back up)
What therapy do we use for patients who have become septic
Aminoglycosides such as gentamicin
should gentamicin be given orally or intravenously for septic infections?
Intravenously
