Acute
severe and sudden in onset
Chronic
A disease or condition that usually lasts for 3 months or longer and may get worse over time.
Uncomplicated UTI
occurs in patients who have a normal, unobstructed genitourinary tract, who have no history of recent instrumentation, and whose symptoms are confined to the lower urinary tract
Complicated UTI
urinary tract infections in immunocompromised patients, males, and those associated with fevers, stones, sepsis, urinary obstruction, catheters, or involving the kidneys are considered complicated infections
Recurrent
occurring often or repeatedly.
Relapse
return to (a less active or a worse state)
Reinfection
infection following recovery from or superimposed on infection of the same type
Upper UTI
occurs either in the kidneys, medically termed pyelonephritis, or in the ureters. This is often more alarming than lower UTI.
Lower UTI
inflammation and infection of the bladder and the urethra
Pyelonephritis
is a sudden and severe kidney infection
Cystitis
inflammation of the bladder, usually caused by a bladder infection
Urethritis
an inflammation (swelling and irritation) of the urethra
Prostatitis
a disorder of the prostate gland usually associated with inflammation
Ascend
to move upward or toward the top
Flank pain
affects the area on either side of the lower back, between the pelvis and the ribs
