UTI/STI Microbiology Flashcards
1
Q
What is the bacteria which causes gonorrhoea?
A
Gram Negative Diploccocci
2
Q
How does N.gonorrhoea impact the immune system?
A
- Prevents complement activation, opsonization and bacterial killing
- Modulates activity of macrophages, DC’s and neutrophils
- Modulates T cell function to avoid adaptive immune system
3
Q
What is GRASP?
A
Gonococcal resistance to antimicrobials surveillance programme
4
Q
What is a target of a cephalosporin?
A
PBP2
5
Q
Most resistant isolates contain a mutation which influences the gene (penA) therefore what happens?
A
Messes with the protein structure
6
Q
What type of bacteria causes chlamydia?
A
Gram Negative with over 19 different serovars
7
Q
What is the lifecycle of chlamydia?
A
- Infectious elementary body (EB) binds and enters the cell
- EB differentiates to RB (reticulate body)
- RB starts to grow OR can be turned into a persitent form
- RB reactivate to turn to EB
- EB release from cells
Entire process takes 40-48 hours
8
Q
How does E.coli cause a UTI?
A
- Invasion and colonisation
- Bacterial growth and biofilm formation
- Production of proteases and toxins causing cellular damage and dispersion
- Ascension to the kidneys
