What is a transgender person?
A person who’s gender does not align with their gender assigned at birth
What is a cisgender person?
A person who’s gender identity does align with their gender assigned at birth
What is a non-binary person?
A person who does not identify with either side of the gender binary
What is the treatment pathway for gender health?
- Patient presents to GP
- GP refers patient to gender identity clinic
- Patient given access to peer support service
- First assessment with GIC
- Second assessment with GIC
- Treatment initiation
What medication is used for feminisation?
Oestrogen medication
What are GnRH analogues (blockers) used for?
To achieve maximum suppression of the secondary male sexual charateristics
Introduced alongside oestrogen therapy
What medication is used for masculinisation?
Testosterone preparations - by IM injection or gel
When prescribing testosterone products what should be done?
They should be prescribed by brand as they are not bioequivalent
What happens to patients who transition?
They may still have medical conditions relating to their biological sex e.g. trans male patients who have a cervic will still need cervical smear exams
What should we always ensure for documentation and correspondence?
Reflects the patient’s preferred names, gender and pronouns
