Therapy for Acute Uncomplicated Urinary Tract infection in Females ( non pregnant)
Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazol
One DS q12h po x 3/7
Noroxin 400mg q12h x 3/7
Cipro 250mg q12h x 3/7
If the patient has UTI that is caused by
P. aeruginosa what drug of choice should be use
Cipro 250 mg q12h * 3
Levo 250 mg q12h * 3 days
What advise would you give a female patients that has UTI
Drink plenty water Practices proper hygiene Increase in Vit C Do not wipe from back to front Do not delay the Urge to urinate
prophylaxis for UTI in the case of having UTI more than 3 times for the year
Bactrim 1⁄2 ss od x 6/12
Or
Nitrofurantoin 50mg OD x 6/12
Pyelonephritis therapy in men
Usually the patient has a high fever ..and is required to do a gram stain to figure which bacteria cause the infection

Gram-positive cocci (enterococcus):
Amoxicillin/Clavulanate (Augmentin®)
Gram-negative rods:
Sulphamethoxazole-Trimethaprim (Bactrim®) or Ciprofloxacin 500 mg bid until C & S are
How to treat UTI in pregnancy
Amoxicillin / clavulanate 500 mg q8h po 7/52
Or
Cephalexin
What is the effect of the following drugs on pregnancy
Tetracycline - inhibit bone and discoloration of teeth
Sulfonamides - kernicterus and hyperbilirubinemia in 3rd trimester
