WHAT IS A UTI ?
Infection of the urinary tract caused by bacteria entering urethra
3 Types of UTI
- Upper UTI
- Lower UTI
- Recurrent UTI
What is lower UTI ?
Infection in the bladder + urethra
what is an upper UTI ?
Infection of kidneys and ureters
Symptoms of UTI
- Dysuria (pain/burning stinging when peeing)
- Nocturia (frequent urination at night)
- Haematuria (blood in urine)
- Urgency
- Increased frequency urinating
- Tender / pain in Abdomen
- Cloudy/offensive smelling Urine
Management
- Advise on self care - Stay hydrated , wipe front to back , avoid cranberry alkalizing products / don’t delay urination.
- Medication = Antibiotics , dependent on severity - Send urine sample off for testing.
Drug treatment for UTI
1st Line - Trimethoprim ( 200 mg - bd) / Nitrofurantoin 50mg - qds)
Amoxicillin
How long is UTI treatment typically
3 days
If symptoms of UTI do not improve within 3 days what can you do?
Try modified released of nitrofuranatoin for 3 days (100mg) 2x
or Penecillan or Fosmycin - 1 dose.

High temperture + 38'C vomiting lethargy Jaundice Poor feeding
Cause of UTI in Kids
Bacteria entering urethra
What makes kids more vulnerable to UTIs ?
- Constipation
2. Dysfunctional elimination syndrome - Holding urge to pee
Treatment for UTI in kids ?
Babies <3 months admitted to hospital to be given IV treatment.
AB treatment
What other cause to consider if px comes in with UTI like symptoms ?
PYELONEPHRITIS - TYPE OF UPPER UTI (infection of kidneys)
Symptoms of pyelonephritis ?
- Loin Pain
- Fever + chills
- Rigor
- Tenderness of flank/groin
- Frequency of dysuria
