What causes sore throat ?
A
Viral / bacteria infections
- Tonsillitis
- Laryngitis
- Strep Throat - caused by streptococcus bacteria
- Glandular fever

Symptoms of sore throat ?
A
- Discomfort swallowing
- inflammation
- redness
- swollen glands
- soreness of back of throat - ?tonsils
- Tonsillar exudate - fluid excreted by tonsils in repsonse to inflammation

What can we use to distinguish severity of sore throat ?
A
FEVERPAIN

5 Criteria of FEVERPAIN
A
- Fever +38
- Purulence (pus)
- Attend Rapidly
- Severly Inflammed Tonsils
- No cough /coryza

Red flags for sore throat
A
- diff breathing
- diff swallowing
- immunosupression
- severe/persistent symptoms

Treatment
A
1st line - Ibuprofen / paracetamol
lozenges / local anaesthetics (i.e Bencocaine)
Antibacterial = - benzalkonium / amylmetacresol / hexylresorcinol

When to give AB with sore throat ?
A
FEVERPAIN = 4-5 and if systemically unwell

What antibiotics do you give fore sore throat ?
A
1st line = phenoxymethylpenicillin
2nd = Clarithromycin / erythromycin
