A

Viral / bacteria infections

  1. Tonsillitis
  2. Laryngitis
  3. Strep Throat - caused by streptococcus bacteria
  4. Glandular fever

Symptoms of sore throat ?

A
  1. Discomfort swallowing
  2. inflammation
  3. redness
  4. swollen glands
  5. soreness of back of throat - ?tonsils
  6. Tonsillar exudate - fluid excreted by tonsils in repsonse to inflammation

5 Criteria of FEVERPAIN

A
  1. Fever +38
  2. Purulence (pus)
  3. Attend Rapidly
  4. Severly Inflammed Tonsils
  5. No cough /coryza

Red flags for sore throat

A
  • diff breathing
  • diff swallowing
  • immunosupression
  • severe/persistent symptoms

Treatment

A

1st line - Ibuprofen / paracetamol
lozenges / local anaesthetics (i.e Bencocaine)

Antibacterial = - benzalkonium / amylmetacresol / hexylresorcinol

A

FEVERPAIN = 4-5 and if systemically unwell
