Uterus, Uterine tubes and cervix Flashcards
Name all the parts of the uterus and what their functions are.
1) Body of uterus
2)Funds of the uterus (top of the uterus)=help balance the appropriate hormones during pregnancy and aids in the protection of the uterus
3)Endometrium=lining
4)Myometrium=thick middle layer- it expands during pregnancy and holds the growing baby-contracts during labour to push the baby out
5)Perimetrium=outer lining of the uterus- secretes lubricating fluid that helps to reduce friction
6)Cervix= small canal that connects the uterus to the vagina- cervix widens during child birth and fluid can enter or leave the uterus
7)Vagina
8)Fimbriae= Finger like projections at the ends of the fillopian tubes next to the ovary= they catch the egg and waft it down tube
9)uterine tube=tube connecting ovary to uterus-carry oocyte to the uterus each month
10)ovary= produce egg
11)Ovarian ligament=Fibrous band of ligament that connects to the brood ligament-connects ovary to the side of the uterus
12)Broad ligament= Holds the uterus in its normal position within the pelvis and maintains the relationship between fallopian tubes, uterus and ovaries
13) Suspensory ligament= attach each ovary to the pelvic sidewall
what is the main muscle of the uterus?
Myometrium
why is it that the uterus of a baby girl in the womb is so large? (size of a pear) also what happens to the myometrium as a result?
This is because the uterus is exposed to so much oestrogen and progesterone from the mother it starts growing. This is also causes the myometrium to grow
why does the uterus shrink after menopause?
This is because after menopause the lvls of oestrogen and progesterone drop so the LH and FSH remain high. These high lvls cause the uterus to shrink.
What is a feature of the myometrium? (what type of muscle is it? )
It is an expansion muscle-it undergoes dynamic muscular contractions
