Def of menorrhagia
Normally timed menstrual cycles but excessive bleeding
What is the normal length of menstruated cycle and how long does normal bleeding last?
21-35 day cycle; bleeding last 3-5 days
5 causes of menorrhagia
- Fibroids
- Adenomyosis
- Endometrial polyps
- Endometrial hyperplasia/ malignancy
- Bleeding disorder (ITP, vWF) –> esp in younger pts
Def of metrorrhagia
Regular cycles with bleeding between the cycles
3 causes of metrorrhagia
- Cervical lesions
- Endometrial polyps
- Endometrial carcinoma
Menometrorrhagia
Excessive bleeding (>80mL) at irregular intervals
4 causes of menometrorrhagia
- Fibroids
- Adenomyosis
- Endometrial polyps
- Endometrial hyperplasia/ malignancy
Hypomenorrhea
Regularly timed menses with light periods
3 causes of hypomenorrhea
- Hypogonadism ( anorexia, heavy exercise)
- Contraception use
- Asherman’s syndrome (intrauterine adhesions)
Oligomenorrhea
Periods more than 35 days apart
Causes of oligo?
Hyperprolactinemia Thyroid dysfunction (hypothyroid)
Dysfunctional uterine bleeding
Abnormal bleeding with no identifiable cause
MCC of DUB?
Anovulation- without ovulation, there is no corpus luteum and no progesterone, so there is continual proliferation of endometrium until it outgrows blood supply and sloughs off at irregular times
