Using VR Flashcards
What are methods that can be used instead of VR?
Photographs, which are realistic but uninvolved, and face-to-face actors which have limitations because of cost/replicability/flexibility etc
How is VR attempting to replace real world?
In space, measurement and control
What are four types of VR?
TV (less immersive and less reactive to participant), on-screen VR (less immersive and more reactive to participant), 360 video (more immersive and less reactive to participant), immersive VR (more immersive and more reactive to participant)
What are some technical issues with VR?
What movement to use and programming
Do people respond naturally to facial expressions in VR?
Expectation of a greater distance from angry faces, eg Ruggiero et al 2017 active/passive approach (all push button)
What examples of stop distance paradigm studies?
Kennedy et al 2009, Gessarol et al 2013, Lough et al 2016
How can CBT exposure therapy be used?
Real vs imagined scenarios, and can be graduated and measured
How can VR be used in therapy for anxiety?
Exposure therapy in VR appears effective for treatment of multiple specific phobias such as arachnophobia and aviophobia (Parsons and Rizzo 2008)
How can VR help public speaking?
Lower HR and self report scores (Harris, Kemmerling and North 2002), though in one study with a symbolic VR environment, participants with anxiety were more stressed by the environment symbolic VR (Herbelin et al 2002)
Is public speaking a suitable way to study anxiety?
Public speaking phobia is specific and separable from generalised social anxiety disorder. This shows the specificity of scenarios and over all face-to-face leads to greater improvement. These studies show the complexity of using VR
What was Lin et al’s 2019 study?
Arousal bio-feedback-based exposure therapy. Participants trained to control level of arousal in more and more difficult speaking situations. Non-clinical but high anxiety scoring sample. Self-rated measures
