Using Technology in Health Promotion and Disease Management Flashcards
What are the benefits of electronic medical records?
Availability, limited access, less redundancy, fewer medical errors, physician can see the patient’s “big picture”
What are the benefits of a patient portal?
Communication (billing/message your doctor) and information (see your health history)
What is the Michigan tailoring system?
patient-centered care model. Tailor interventions based on full medical history, culture, and other factors
Why is telemedicine beneficial?
made care accessible during COVID-19, streamlining, and less patient anxiety
How do health monitoring devices help patients?
Can relay info to healthcare team, easier + more accurate than diary recording, summarize overall trends, can detect problems in real time (ex: atrial fibrillation)
What does CGM stand for?
Continuous glucose monitor
How does the CGM work?
Reads plasma glucose, then decides to give insulin based on individual insulin sensitivity, meals, time of day, and physical activity. “Artificial pancreas”
What can predictive algorithms provide us?
Evidence-based treatment plans, give health care resources to the most high risk, and can identify widespread problems in the industry
What is BioVU?
Vandy’s system of using anonymous discarded blood/tissue DNA for research.
What is the synthetic derivative (SD)?
Vandy’s compilation of anonymous clinical info from electronic medical records. Amazing for research. ~2 million records
What was the healthy eating study?
Conducted in the mid-south. Used electronic health records, GPS, and RedCap surveys for monitoring meals and rating stress. Sorted meals by location (i.e. work, home, restaurant), company, and mood. Huge study, finding eating patterns
What are some forms of web-based support?
Text messaging self-care reminders, educational websites, and apps
Should you use brain training apps?
Little evidence to support their actual benefit.
What are examples of assistive technologies?
Prosthetic limbs, hip/knee replacements, cochlear implants, ALS speech synthesizers
