What is sustainable development?
A
An approach to development that takes into account the needs of present society while not damaging the lives of future generations

What are natural resources?
A
Resources that form without human impact (anything that comes from earth, sea, air)
- some can be improved by synthetic products or improved upon by man-made processes

What are renewable resources?
A
- they reform at a similar rate or faster than, we use them
E.g. timber as trees can be planted following harvest and only take a few years to grow

What are non-renewable resources?
A
Resources that aren’t formed quickly enough to be considered replaceable
- after being extracted many undergo man-made processes to provide fuels and materials for modern life

Environmental problems with mining
A
- causes pollution (noise and air)
- causes landscape scars (large mounds of rock left behind)
- habitat destruction- threatens biodiversity
