Using Resources Flashcards
Sustainability
Using natural materials in a way that does compromise future gens ability to do the same
What is Potable Water
Water that has low enough levels of dissolved salts + microbes that is safe to drink
Taken from Freshwater source (river)
Filtered to remove insoluble particles
Sterilised using Chlorine
Fluoride added to reduce tooth decay
Desalination
removal of salt via distillation or reverse osmosis : makes it safe to drink (REQUIRES ALOT OF ENERGY)
Waste Water Treatment
1) Screening and grit removal
2) Sedimentation to produce sewage sludge and effluent
3) Anerobic digestion of sewage sludge
4) aerobic biological treatment of effluent
Why is Copper a useful metal?
Good conductor of electricity and heat
it is easily bent. yet hard enough to make water pipes and tanks
its does not react with water, so lasts for longer
Phytomining properties
As the plants grow they absorb copper into roots
The plants are then burned and the ash produced contains copper in high quantiites
Bioleaching Properties
Bacterial produce Leachate solutions that contain copper ions that can be extracted
Purifying water
1) use universal indicator paper to measure the pH of the water sample
2) weigh an empty evaporating basin
3) use a measuring cyclinder to pour 10 ml of water sample 1 into the evaporating basin
4) heat the evaporating basin, over a water bath, using a Bunsen burner
5) continue heating until the majority of the water has evaporated, then leave on the side until the remaining water has evaporated
6) weigh the cooled evaporating basin again and record the mass of the solids that were dissolved in the water
7) repeat steps from 1-7 for 2-3
