Using Resources Flashcards
Bioleaching and phytomining
Bioleaching
Bacteria is used to covert copper compounds in the ore to soluble copper compounds separting copper from the ore in processes, the leachate can then be electrolysed
Phytomining
Growing plants in soil that contains copper ,copper builds up in leaves ,the plants are then harvested dried and then burnt ,the compound is then electrolysed
How can you test copper surface for water
Add water to anhydrous copper surface the coil or shoudl change from white to blue
Why is replying materials inportant
Mining and extracting takes a lot of energy which comes from combustion of fossil fuels
Recycling materials uses less energy ,this cutting down on waste getting Sent to landfill
How can glass be recycled
Glass is crushed and the melted to be reshaped into products
LCA :getting raw material
Extracting raw material can damage local environment and pollution
Raw materials need to be processed to extract materials and this requires large amount of energy
LCA manufacturing
Manufacturing products can use a lot of energy and caus pollution
Also you need to take waste products and how to dispose of them into mind
LCA using product
burning fules releases greenhouse gasses and other harmful substances ,fertilisers can leach into streams and cause damage to ecosystems
LCA product disposal
Products are disposed of in a landfill ,this pollutes the land
And energy is used to transport waste to landfill
Problems with life cycle assessments
Certain types of waste produced over a lifetime can be quantified however with pollutants it’s harder to gives numerical value
Properties of potable water
Safe to drink
has ph of 6.5-8.5
Levels of discord salts arnt too high
Waste water sources
Agricultural systems and industrial processes
Sewage treatment stages
Sewage is screened removing large material
Then undergoes sedimentation, heavier suspended solids fall to bottom and form sludge and effluent floats to the top
Effluent is removed and treated by aerobic digestion
Aerobic respiration releases methane which can be used as energy and digested waste is used in fertiliser
For any remaining toxic substances ,the water is treated with chlorine and uv radiation
