1
Q

what are ceramics

A

non metal
high meting point that arent made from carbon based compounds
can be made of clay
clay is a soft materia when it is dugg out of the ground and can be molded into different shapes
when fired at high temperature , it can harden to be clay ceramic

Q

glass

A

generally transparent
can be moulded when hot
can be brittle when weak
most glass is made from soda line glass which is made by hitting a mixture of limestone sand and sodium carbonates until the melts when the mixture cools it comes out as Glass
boroilicate glass has a higher melting point than soda lime glass it is made the same way using a mixture of sand and boron trioxide

8
Q

High density polyethene

A

High density polyethene n is also made from ethene but as a lower temperature and pressure with a catalyst it is more rigid and is used for water tanks and drain pipes

Q

themo softening polymers

A

Thermos softening polymers contain individual polymer chains and entwined together with weak forces between the chain
you can melt these plastics and remould them

Q

Thermal setting polymers

A

Thermo setting polymers contain monomers that can form crosslinks between the polymer chains holding the chains together in a solid structure
they don’t soften when heated
they are strong card and rigid

Q

Composites

A

Composite are made from one material embedded in another
fibres or fragments of a material are surrounded by a matrix acting as a binder
the properties of composite depends on the properties of the material is being made from

Q

Examples of composites

A

Fiberglass consist of fibres of glass embedded in a Matrix made of polymer
it has a low density but it’s very strong and it’s useful stuff like boats and surfboards and skis.
carbon fiber composites also have a polymer matrix durian enforcement is either made from long chains of carbon atoms bonded together or from carbon nano tubes these compost sites are very strong and light so you can be used in aerospace and sports car manufacturing
wood is a natural composite of cellulose fibers how to get a van organic polymer Matrix
concrete is made from aggregate embedded in cement it is vey strong and ideal as a building material

Q

Aluminium alloys

A

To make an aircrafts
Low density

17
Q

Steel

A

Are alloys of iron that contains specific amount of carbon and other metals
High carbon steel is strong, but brittle
Local steel is softer but easily shaped
Steel contains chromium, and nickel are hard and resistance to corrosion

18
Q

What is corrosion?

A

It is a destruction of materials by chemical reactions with substances in the environment

19
Q

Example of corrosion

A

Rusting is an example of corrosion
Both air and water is necessary for ion to rust

20
Q

How to prevent corrosion?

A

By applying a coating that acts as a barrier, for example, greasing, painting, or electroplating
Aluminium has an oxide coating that protects deals from further corrosion

21
Q

What can be used to observe water from the air?

A

Calcium chloride

22

Ceramics

A

Insulators of heat and electricity
Brittle
Stiff

23
Q

Polymers

A

Insulators of heat and electricity
Flexible
Easily moulded

24
Q

Metals

A

Malleable
Good conductors of heat and electricity
Shiny
Stiff

25
Q

Composites

A

Properties depend on matrix/binder and the reinforcement used to make them
