Using resources Flashcards
What does renewable mean?
Resources which do not run out.
What does non- renewable mean?
Resources that do run out.
List some renewable resources
Solar, hydropower, geothermal, tidal, wave power.
List some non- renewable resources
Coal, oil, gas, nuclear
What does sustainable mean?
The resource can be made at the same rate as it is used.
What do you mean by potable water?
Water that is safe to drink.
What do you mean by pure water?
Water that has nothing dissolved in it..
What is reverse osmosis?
Water is pushed from low to high concentrations through a membrane using pressure.
What is desalination?
Removing salt from water.
What does grit removal do for sewage?
To remove large insoluble solids.
Why do they add bacteria to sewage?
Bacteria break down organic material in the presence of oxygen.
What are the uses of sludge?
Burning or fertiliser
What are the uses of biogas?
Burning.
What happens in a sedimentation tank?
Insoluble solids settle to the bottom of the tank.
Summarise the steps of water processing
Sewage is filtered, sediment is allowed to settle at the bottom and is pumped into a sludge tank, the water is then mixed with good bacteria which respires the organic material. The bacteria is then allowed to settle out as sediment. The effluent water can be returned to the river. They may also add chlorine to kill bacteria.
What is bioleaching?
a new technique that involves using bacteria to extract metals, such as copper, from low-grade ores
blast furnace
What is a blast furnace?
the huge reaction vessels used in industry to extract iron from its ore
What is a life cycle assessment?
carried out to assess the environmental impact of products, processes or services at different stages in their life cycle
What is thermal decomposition?
the breakdown of a compound by heating it
