Bionergetics Flashcards
What is an Endothermic reaction?
A chemical reaction which takes in energy from the environment (photosynthesis is endothermic)
What is glucose Glucose?
A molecule which can be used to release energy. Made during photosynthesis in plants. Used in respiration.
What do I mean by Limiting factor?
Something that controls the rate of a chemical reaction
What is Photosynthesis?
Chemical reaction that happens in chloroplasts of plants. Uses carbon dioxide and water. Makes glucose and oxygen.
What is rate of reaction?
How quickly a product is made.
What is chlorophyll?
Enzyme which is used to absorb sunlight during photosynthesis. Found in the chloroplasts
What are chloroplasts?
Organelle found in plant cells which carries out photosynthesis.
What is the function of palisade mesophyll?
Layer of cells full of chloroplasts that carry out photosynthesis.
What is the function of spongy mesophyll?
Layer of cells in a leaf which contain lots of gaps to increase gas exchange.
What is an enzyme?
Biological catalyst which increases rate of reactions
What do I mean if an enzyme is denatured?
When an enzyme changes shape and no longer works. This can happen due to an increase in temperature or pH
What is the test for starch?
Iodine turns black.
How would I measure the rate of photosynthesis?
Count bubbles of oxygen or measure the volume of oxygen made using a measuring cylinder or gas syringe.
How can I decrease light intensity?
Increase the distance from the light source.
What are the limiting factors of photosynthesis?
Light intensity, temperature and carbon dioxide concentration.
