Using genome projects Flashcards
1
Q
define a genome
A
The entire set of DNA in an organism may have to chop it up,sequence it then put it back in order
2
Q
why has the genome of simpler organisms been sequenced?
A
- to help identify the proteome as bacteria do not have much non-coding DNA
- could help identify potential antigens for usage in vaccine production
3
Q
why is the genome of more complex organisms harder to sequence?
A
- DNA contains many non-coding regions
- there are complex regulatory genes to determine when other genes are ‘switched’ on/off so harder to translate genome into proteome
- codes for 30,000 human proteins developed so far
- sequencing methods continuously updated and have been automated
