Q

why has the genome of simpler organisms been sequenced?

A
  • to help identify the proteome as bacteria do not have much non-coding DNA
  • could help identify potential antigens for usage in vaccine production

Q

why is the genome of more complex organisms harder to sequence?

A
  • DNA contains many non-coding regions
  • there are complex regulatory genes to determine when other genes are ‘switched’ on/off so harder to translate genome into proteome
  • codes for 30,000 human proteins developed so far
  • sequencing methods continuously updated and have been automated
