differences in DNA can be exploited Flashcards
1
Q
define DNA probe
A
a short length of single-stranded DNA that has a known and specific base sequence complementary to part of the target allele which it binds/hybridises to. The probe is usually attached to a radioactive(X-ray)or fluorescent(UV light)label that indicates its position.
It attaches to one DNA strand too.

Q
what are DNA probes used for?
A
- to locate specific alleles of genes to diagnose genetic disorders
- identifies health risks which helps determine treatment
- can be used to inform genetic counselling
