USING ELECTRICITY Behind The Wall Flashcards
What do min fuses do?
Protect the mains wiring from overheating and causing a fire if too large a current is drawn.
Is household wiring in parallel or series?
Parallel so that each receives full supply voltage and so if one is switched off the rest stays on.
Where are the mains fuses found?
Fuse box
What are circuit breakers?
Automatic switches which trigger when too large a current is drawn.
What is a kilowatt hour?
A unit of energy.
1kwH=
1kw for one hour
Are ring circuits parallel or series?
Parallel
What are advantages of ring circuits?
Less current in each wire as there is more than one path
Thinner cable can be use since there is shared current
Less risk of ever heating as there is smaller current
What are the differences between power and lightning circuits?
Lighting Sockets
Simple parallel Ring
5A max 30A max
Thin cable Thick cables
What are advantages of circuit breakers?
They can be reset
How do you convert kilowatt hours into joules?
Change kilowatts into watts and hours into seconds then p=et
What is the national grid?
The service that gives electricity to homes
is the lighting circuit in series or parallel?
Parallels
What size of fuse does the lighting circuit have?
5A
What size of fuse does the ring main circuit have?
30A
