Using carbon fuels Flashcards
What different characteristics should be considered when choosing a fuel?
>energy value >ease of use >cost >pollution caused >availability >storage method >toxicity
What is the word equation for burning fuel in air?
fuel + oxygen > carbon dioxide + water
What are the two word equations for incomplete combustion?
- fuel + oxygen > carbon monoxide + water
- fuel + oxygen > carbon + water
When does incomplete combustion happen?
When there is not enough oxygen
What is given off when fuels burn in a shortage of oxygen?
soot and unwanted toxic gases (e.g. carbon monoxide)
What does the blue flame on a Bunsen burner mean?
The combustion is complete as the hole is open so there is plenty of oxygen.
-more energy released
What does the yellow flame on a Bunsen burner mean?
- Incomplete combustion
- Hole closed
- Lack of oxygen
- Less energy transferred
What are the advantages of complete combustion?
- More energy released
- No toxic gases or soot produced
How can burning fuels cause pollution problems?
Fossil fuels:
- contribute to greenhouse effect
- produces Co2
- contribute to global warming
Coal:
- has sulfur in it
- burning it gives off sulfur dioxide
- dissolves to make acid rain
- damages buildings, statues and kills fish & trees
What is the symbol equation for complete combustion?
CH4 + O2 > CO2 + H2O
