Began as series of small revivals in local churches
called “camp meetings”

500 church rivers among the red river
Camped out for several days
Second camp meeting 8000 people showed up
Churcheds all over began holding camp meetings
Yale was a popular location for the meetings
Held by Timothy Dwight
He spoke out against the age of reason

Tax collector pulls gun and fires into the crowd hits and kills 11 year old boy
One of the English soldiers gets knocked over gun goes off
All soldiers open fire and kill 5 colonists

Boston tea party

The Boston tea party
The gaspee
Captain had a bad reputation. Bad crew. Told not to come back by colonial government
Was given permission by the governer to come back
Burned the ship to the ground
King paid salary for the governer. Hope the governer would do what the king wanted
Dartmouth
First ship arrived with taxed tea
Colonists refused to buy the tea (boycotting)
England forced them to pay tax anyway
Ship wouldn’t leave until colonists bought the tea and paid tax
Middle of the night 150 colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians
Boarded the dartmouth
Dumped 342 cases of tea into the Boston harbor
Didn’t touch anything on the ship but the tea
British respond by passing more acts
Coercive or intolerable acts
The Boston port act: closed the Boston harbor until tea is payed for
Massachusetts government act: removed the Massachusetts charter
Impartial administration of justice act: trials in another colony or England
Impartial jury
New quartering act: private homes
Colonial response to the intolerable acts
Held the first continental congress
35 representatives from colonies discussed what to do about England. All but Georgia
Declaration of rights and grievances
Write a list and send to the king of all their violated rights
