USDA SOIL CLASSIFICATION Flashcards
Soils with permafrost within 2m of the soil surface (very cold)
Gelisols
Organic Soils (>20% organic matter), deep organic matter, wet conditions
Histosols
Acid forest soils with a subsurface accumulation of metal-humus complexes (cool, wet, sand, acid, coniferous forest)
Spodosols
Soils formed in volcanic ash (mild weathering)
Andisols
Intensely weathered soils of tropical and subtropical environments (wet, tropical, ion activity, clays, extreme weathering)
Oxisols
Clayey soils with high shrink/swell capacity (high base, dry season)
Vertisols
Soils of arid environments with subsurface horizon development (desert conditions)
Aridisols
Strongly leached soils with subsurface clay accumulation and <35% base saturation (strongly acid, clays, wet, warm, acid silicate and oxides)
Ultisol
Grassland soils with high base saturation (soft, dark, semiarid to moist)
Mollisols
Moderately leached soils with subsurface clay accumulation and >35% base saturation (mildly acid, clays, moist)
Alfisols
Soils with weakly developed subsurface horizons (not much B Horizon development)
Inceptisols
Recent soils/Other soils
Entisol
