-large % society opposed new law-> high unemployment
- increase in lawlessness-> smuggling alcohol e.g: bootleggers= carried illegal brew/ gangsters +criminals=rich b/c selling + importing illegal alcohol for example: Al Capone= Chicago gangster with $60mil/year and killed 400
- speakeasies= illegal underground bars that welcomed women and mixed races/ ppl = frustrated b/c Govt. raised taxes to make up revenue from taxes on alcohol/ Hip flasks and submarine cable to pipe whiskey from Canada-> Milwaukee

Causes Of Prohibition
REASON ONE= growth in urban areas
- more ppl lived in cities where alcohol was more readily available -> saw cities as corrupt influences
- Americans worried abt new immigrants b/c didn’t like their cultures of drinking
REASON TWO= Strong Temperance movement
-saw drinking= unamerican
- most Christians who believed alcohol damaged family life
REASON THREE= WW1
-when there was no alcohol there were less drunks and as a result there was a boost in worker efficiency and productivity
Cause for the re-emergence of the KKK
-mass immigration-> 15mil+ great migration
-1915 film=’ The Birth of a Nation’ = sympathetic -> depicted as heroic -> increased KKK support
-2nd KKK in Georgia
Impacts of the KKK on American society .
-100,000 membs in 1921 to 5mil in 1925
- increase in fear amongst AA+ immigrants/ increased violence (50 lynching)
- increased intimidation= burnt crosses out front of AA+ Catholic
-political pwr increased-> 50,000 member paraded
-indiana= elcted member of KKK
-late 1920’s= decrease pwr and ifluence b/c scandals + corruption
-Indiana = exposed hypocritcal
Why was censorship introduced?
-interactions b/w sexes + revealing clothes= bad influence on society
- 37 states introduced almost 100 film censorship laws in 1921
-Will Hays= Republic Nat Committee =’clean up’-> created ‘do’s and don’ts list’ for movies
-faced with the prospect of having to complyw hundreds and potentially thousands of inconcistent decency laws
How did the cinema change American society?
SOCIAL IMPACTS
- cinema = center of social life
- most pop day was a Sunday h/w it decreased the attendance of church
- films influenced behaviour and reinforced/ challenged values of time
- materialism + consumerism = brands/ fashion trends had an influence on society
Impacts Of Jazz
- prohibition= helped ppl forget they were breaking the law and enjoyed themselves
SOCIAL IMPACTS
-elevated some status of AA e.g.: famous musicians = Ella Fitzgerald
-Jazz= seen as corrupt influence / belief jazz stimulated sexual activity
-‘the devil’s music’ - mixing of races= detrimental to American culture

Late 1800’s= Jazz emerged from New Orlans in Deep South
-Chicago + New York = major centers for Jazz b/c of Great migration
- challenged values of 1920’s by associating w/ prohibition( speakeasies) + mix b/w races
Impacts of Women suffrage?
Aug 18th, 1920-> 19th Amendment -> gave US women the vote
Immediate effect= had tow in women’s vote now by caring for prohibition, child health, public skls.
For example, Sheppard-Towner Act (1921)= govt funded maternity + child care ->creation of 300 children and maternal health centers-> decrease infant mortality 76.2 deaths to 67.6 deaths
H/W women’s% didn’t match men’s % bc only 11 women elected congress in 1920’s
Cultural and Economic changes for women.
Eco= paid 50% of men’s wage/ only 10% of women had an education h/w couldn’t enter into prestige’s colleges such as Harvard for medicine/ if women = pregnant-> potentially sacked-> decrease in job productivity

- flappers -> flouted social norms by wearing short skirts, drinking, smoking/ mostly middle class women h/w there were little no. which meant that there was no significant influence on society and most women at the time wanted to stick to their traditional role

Restricting immigration act of 1917= literature requirement/ Immg act of 1924 limited no. immig through nationality = only 2% of total no. ppl of each nationality/ law heavily favored North + Western Euro / Great B + Ireland+ German accounted for 70% visas - Philippines = can enter however Japan, Korea and China were unable to

- new product = affordable+ accessible -> outer suburbs of cities devlp. quickly

Why was Henry Ford successful?
b/c could produce in just 1.5 hrs by 1913 + price dropped to $285= affordable in urban areas/ single color and engine size ->fewer parts needed= cheaper/ Late 1920’s = assembly line bought work to worker= more efficient + produce car every minute
What were the social impacts of the economic boom?
-Change in state of mind= believe they have right to prosperity/ -> increased consumption-> increased prod. -> increased eco
- ppl ‘ bought on credit’ = ‘ buy now pay later’
