USA NY Flashcards
New York
General
NY is the state where winemaking started in the USA
New York has the nation’s third largest vineyard area and is the third largest wine-producing state by volume
Bulk of grapes is made for other products rather than for wine (usually from Concord grape)
Winters are brutal, winemakers bury their vineyards to protect the vines from freeze
Dr Konstantin Frank was key. Beginning in the 1950s, Frank worked to understand the potential for vinifera in the Finger Lakes and champion the state’s now-signature variety, Riesling.
