Who were the first main leaders of Civil Rights and Black Advocacy?
William Edward Burghardt Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, and Marcus Garvey.
What did Du Bois do and what did he believe in?
He refused to agree with the idea that black Americans were in any way inferior o white Americans. He started the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) in 1909. He used legal means to improve the conditions of black Americans in employment, housing, voting, and education.
What did Washington do and what did he believe in?
Booker T. Washington was a well known teacher, and founder of a school for black Americans in Tuskegee, ‘Bama, which saw much success. His school specialized in industrial and agricultural training. He believed that black Americans had to be trained and have an education before they could fight for Civil Rights, that African-Americans could not advance without an education.
What did Marcus Garvey do and what did he believe in?
He formed the ‘Universal Negro Improvement Association ‘ (UNIA), which advocated for black Americans to ‘return’ to their ancestral homeland of Africa. He was a large advocate of black American identity.
