What factors were there for women recieving the vote?
Changing attitudes to women in society, women’s suffrage campaigns, militant suffragette campaign up to 1914, part played by women in the war effort 1914-18, the example of other countries such as New Zealand.
What does the term ‘different spheres’ mean?
It means that men and women were not only physically different, but also emotionally different. This meant social roles were based off their respective abilities. Men were seen as ‘breadearner’ who were also to protect the household and the country, whereas women were to tend to the upkeep of the house and the children.
What were political women criticized for?
Political women were criticized for ‘neglecting their femininity’ and were seen as incapable of rational thought.
How did Queen Victoria describe the women’s suffrage campaigns?
She described the campaigns as ‘that mad wicked folly of women’s rights.’
Why did women want the vote?
To gain more equality, as if women had gained the vote, politicians would have to legislate for women too in order to win votes.
