What is the American constitution?
A supreme law of the USA, signed in 1787
What are states?
Place in America, each has it own government, courts, laws and police force
What is a constitution?
The rules by which America is to be run, it makes sure no one has to much power
What is the Supreme Court?
The highest court in America, makes sure laws don’t break constitution
What is a Congress?
They have to agree to all new laws, split into two house the senate and the House of Representatives
What is a federal law?
These are laws that are created at a national level and apply to the whole nation
What is a state law?
These are laws created at a state level and apply to a certain state

What is an economic boom?
When the economy of a country suddenly does well. People become richer and the standards of living are improved because people are being paired more
What is the laissez-faire
The government didn’t interfere with businesses
What is an assembly line?
A line of workers and machines in a factory assembling products
Who was Henry Ford?
He led the way in introducing new methods of production
What was the first model car?
The Ford model T, it only came in one colour…….. Black
Who didn’t benefit for the boom?
The farmers and people in rural areas, because they didn’t work in factories
Why were immigration restrictions introduced?
By 1920 there were 105 different nationalities in America, it wasn’t what they thought
Why did people move to America?
People moved to America from Europe after ww1 to escape poverty
Why didn’t Americans like immigrants?
Americans felt swamped by the immigrants and they offered little to American society and many didn’t speak English, WASPS looked down on them and everyone had different cultural beliefs
What was the literacy literacy test?
All immigrants had to pass a literacy test in English
What was the immigration act?
Introduced in 1929 it restricted immigration to 150,000 per year
Why did the Russian revolution effect America?
America’s were frightened because there were lots of communists coming to America
When were Sacco and Vanzetti arrested?
On the 5th may 1920,
When was the Sacco and Vanzetti trial?
The trial took place at the start of the red scare, the process dragged on for six years and on the 24th August 1927 Sacco and Vanzetti were electrocuted
What is segregation?
Separating people apart from others because of their skin colour, religion and culture
What were the Jim Crow laws?
The Jim Crow laws formalised racial discrimination from the 1890’s saying black Americans had to be treated separate but equal
Where did most black people live in 1910?
75% of Black people lived in the south
How many Lynchings took place between 1915-1922?
There were 430
What was the NAACP?
A group which challenged white supremacy, end segregation laws. 90,000 members
What was the UNIA?
Campaigned against lynching, Jim Crow laws and denial of black voting, over 1 million members
What is Prohibition?
The prevention by law of the manufacture, sale and transport of alcohol
Why was Prohibition introduced?
Concerned about employees
Seen as an evil sin by religious people
Led to violence and crime
Why didn’t Prohibition work?
People used speakeasys
Bootleggers imported illegal liquor supplies
What are Gangsters?
People that carry out violent attacks usually ending in murders
Who was Al Capone?
One of the most famous gangsters of all Tim he was involved in the St valentines day massacre
Why was Al Capone arrested?
He was arrested for income tax evasion in 1931 he owed $200,000 in taxes
Where did Al Capone go to prison?
Alcatraz
How corrupt were the 1920’s?
Very. People bribed the police, the government drank, there were gang wars and the number of speakeasy rose to 30,000

Harding cabinet which was made up of his mates from Ohio, some of which used there position to get money

A scandal over the teapot dome oil field in Wyoming
Who was Albert Fall?
Hardings secretary of interior, he leased oil fields to friends in exchange for money (Bribes)
Who was Harry Sinclair?
Head of mammoth oil company, he obtained leases to drill at teapot dome
Who was Edward Dohney?
Owner of the Pan American petroleum and transport company. he aquired leases for reserves at elk hills, California

A ver popular Italian-American romantic idol, he died suddenly in 1926 aged 31. People committed suicide when he died
