PATRIOT Act (2001) = granted law enforcement more powers to prevent terrorist attacks – stripped civil liberties
Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF) = authorized the President: to use all necessary and appropriate force against people he determines were involved with 9/11 (was going to give Pres even more power but was a compromise with Congress)

Legacy:
Shaped heavily by events. Suspects detained without warrants etc.
Approval ratings - average 61%
After 9/11 = 90%
When left = about 33%

Richard Nixon (1969-1974)

Watergate scandal
Men went to the moon

Legislation:
Created the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency)
Policy of ‘détente’ with China and Soviet Union (relaxation of strained relations through verbal communication)
He withdrew the last U.S. soldiers from South Vietnam in 1973 (Congress then passed the War Power Resolution Act to stop further involvement in Vietnam - even tho Nixon vetoed it)
Nixon’s vetoes overridden 34 times
Signed Clean Air Act of 1970 and the Clean Water Act.
“Nixon Doctrine” = affirms his desire to withdraw U.S. troops from southeast Asia
Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty – treaty with Soviet Union
