Congress is made up of what?
The Senate (upper house) and the House of Representatives(lower house) - Congress and President run the country
What is the Supreme Court?
Judges (normally experienced lawyers) - main job to ensure the American government do not misuse their power or pass unfair laws (unconstitutional)
What is the Constitution?
Establishes how the government is supposed to operate and what it is allowed to do
What is laissez faire?
The government should do as little as possible to interfere in people’s lives, leave business alone to make profits
What is rugged individualism?
People should work hard to solve own problems and not be helped out
What are tariffs?
Taxes placed on foreign goods to make them more expensive to buy (helping American business thrive)
What did the Fordney-McCumber Tariff do?
High taxes on all foreign made goods sold in the USA (made US goods cheaper to buy) 1922
Other than tariffs and laissez faire, name another Republican policy?
Low taxation (people would have more money to spend, therefore encouraging industrial growth- rich business people benefitted most)
What does state government do?
Looks after any internal affairs of each state (e.g. Education, law and order etc)
What is the Federal system of government?
Individual states look after own internal affairs and anything that concerns all of the states (such as foreign affairs) are dealt with by Congress
